Two versions of an island day
The north-end version combines the town, a meal and Playa Norte. Punta Sur adds a different setting at the southern end and another transport leg. A taxi can take you south without renting a vehicle for the whole day.
Playa Norte and Punta Sur
Playa Norte is one of the island’s main beach destinations. Punta Sur is at its southern end, with cliffs and the remains associated with Ixchel. The destination guide identifies the island’s main places and transport choices.
This is a day-trip plan from Cancún. You do not need to move accommodation to follow it. An overnight stay adds an island evening and morning, but also another check-in and a later crossing back.
Start at the mainland port that suits your address
From downtown Cancún, compare Puerto Juárez first. Its terminal is on Avenida José López Portillo. Playa Tortugas, at Boulevard Kukulcán km 6.5, and Playa Caracol, at km 9.5, are separate Hotel Zone origins. A ticket from one of them does not place you at a dock beside the downtown bus station.
Choose Isla Mujeres and the correct mainland origin when buying through Ultramar. Then arrange the journey to that port. Puerto Juárez and Puerto Cancún are different destinations despite their similar names.
The ferry-port guide gives the visitor tariffs, height rules for children and Playa Caracol’s separate pier charge. It also compares a day trip with moving overnight. The crossing and the road journey to the dock are separate parts of the day.
Version one: northern town and Playa Norte
Travel without the luggage you need only for the mainland room. After landing, keep the day in the northern town and Playa Norte rather than immediately collecting a vehicle for a circuit of the whole island. The town is walkable, and this version can combine time at the beach with a meal before returning to the ferry.
A beach club, rented chair or meal is a separate purchase from the ferry. Compare the option you want on arrival rather than assuming a return boat ticket includes somewhere to sit, eat or change. You can make Playa Norte the main destination without booking a second marine excursion as well.
Choose the intended return before making the day too full. Leave time to return from the beach area, reach the terminal and board the sailing you plan to use. A scheduled mainland activity immediately after the boat adds another commitment to a day already involving two ground journeys and a crossing each way.
Version two: add Punta Sur
For the southern cliffs and temple remains, add an island road journey. Taxis serve the route to Punta Sur; bikes and golf carts are other transport choices promoted for the island. For a short visit, a taxi can add this destination without taking on a rental for the whole day.
Get the vehicle price and return arrangement for the trip you want. A one-way ride south leaves another journey back to the town and ferry. Allow that return before spending the remaining time at Playa Norte or choosing a meal.
The purpose of this version is to see both the northern beach area and the southern headland. If the ferry arrival is late or you want a long beach afternoon, keep Punta Sur for another visit rather than treating an island circuit as compulsory.
A reef excursion is a separate day choice
MUSA, Manchones and Garrafón are named marine or activity destinations around the island. A boat-based reef visit or a park package has its own operator, meeting point and inclusions. It is not part of an ordinary passenger-ferry ticket.
If a marine activity is the reason for going, begin with its confirmed departure and return arrangements, then fit the passenger crossing around them. Do not assume that booking a mainland ferry also reserves the island activity. This guide’s simpler beach and Punta Sur versions leave those optional products separate.
Budget for the whole day and return to Cancún
At the November 2026 standard adult tariff, two return ferry tickets total MXN 1,160. Add transport to and from the chosen mainland dock, any applicable pier charge, island transport and spending. Resident or local ferry tariffs have eligibility requirements and should not be used as the default visitor budget.
Return to the mainland port that fits the onward journey, then continue to the accommodation. Before a very early flight, consider crossing back the preceding day; the airport is still a road journey from the dock. The early-flight guide compares a downtown last night with an airport-area room.

Isla Mujeres from Cancún: ferry ports, visitor fares and stay choices
Puerto Juárez is the first ferry port to compare from a downtown hostel. Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol are Hotel Zone alternatives; the standard adult return fare is MXN 580.
Cancún days: downtown, archaeology or Isla Mujeres
See Maya collections and San Miguelito in the Hotel Zone, spend an evening at Las Palapas downtown, or take a ferry to Isla Mujeres.
